The experts say aspiring authors like me should have a blog, so here begins mine.
I'm reading a fascinating book right now, "The Price was High", a posthumous collection of stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald. As editor Matthew Bruccoli points out (over & over & over), these aren't his best, but nobody writes better sentences than Scott, and that makes for 700+ pages of great reading.
More soon!
And here I thought it was The Price is Right.
ReplyDeleteI read something last week about the literary references on Mad Men, and one was a story by F. Scott, something about a diamond?
Welcome to the Blog!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz", where a semi-normal kid meets one of the world's richest men, who claims to have the title object.
Now considered one of his best, at the time, he could hardly sell it.
It's fascinating to think how many people were reading these things in the Saturday Evening Post.
Stephen King once said something like "stories were a stadium act" back then. Water-cooler-grist, fer shur!
I hadn't thought about that, how a quality piece of literature had a mainstream audience.
ReplyDeleteNow we wind up with a lot of celebrity pseudo-news.
